103: Working with Actors and a Crew, and the Tears of the Dragon Experience
Day 3 of our course on micro-budget movie-making features how to direct actors, organize a crew, and keep them all happy without anybody making any money. The second half of the class will follow up with the filmmakers of Tears of the Dragon, covering how they completed their Lara Croft fan-film, from screening to marketing to media coverage. Panelists for the class include noted director of photography, Kyle DeVriendt, Tim Cunningham, (writer/director of Xtracurricular,) Valerie Perez (producer and star of Tears of the Dragon, a Lara Croft Fan Film,) Nick Murphy (director of Tears of the Dragon), and Sean Rourke (director of Geek-Week.net.), and actors Susan Smythe, Brian Stevenson, Kristen Meinhold, Jack Conway, and Brad Upton.

After a freak boating/drinking/grilling accident, a Texas redneck is mistakenly transported to Valhalla, the legendary afterlife meant for slain Viking heroes. A young man adrift in a dream world of nostalgia confronts his archnemesis in order to save a life, and ultimately creates a new world out of what he loves most—his past. 1:45Nomads - Zero Hour
The Rokian Federation has fallen prey to the sinister Kujan Regime, a military order intent on complete domination. Pursued by the ruthless Commander Darkcloud, rogue survivors are few and far between, yet remain desperate for liberation. So begins the uprising, Nakona Sundown and the cyborg Tek...a rebellion destined to battle for freedom and independence against unspeakable odds. Participating panelists include Joseph L. Ochinero, creator of Scratch Off, Makitso, and co-writer of Nomads— Zero Hour; Calvin Lowe, writer/director of One Quiet Night; Jon deRidder, cameraman; and Bob Gomez, creator of Undone—The Stormrider Chronicles, Psyborg, and co-writer / producer / director.

The filmmakers that brought you the award-winning short film Poof ask, "What is man capable of: his destruction or his creation?" in their new gripping and intelligent sci-fi thriller The Day Tomorrow Came. Participating panelists include Kevin Walla, director/co-writer/co- producer of The Day Tomorrow Came and writer/director of Poof, Tranche de Vie, Embracing Empathy.
2:35A Piece Of Wood
A troubled young scientist in a world that has been at war for 16 years reveals to his commanding officer that he has invented a device to do away with the weapons of the world. Is he serious, or is he delusional? The world is about to find out. Based on the short story written by Ray Bradbury. Participating panelists include Roger Lay Jr., producer; Kevin Atkinson, director of photography; Brandon Moore, composer; Glen Vaughan, "Hollis"; and Larry Dirk, "General Cross".

In a society that treats life like an assembly line, individuality is unheard of for robotlike workers, the Bartholomews. When Bartholomew worker 476 comes upon a mysterious musicbox, he must take drastic measures to fulfill his newfound desire to step out of line and be heard. Participating panelists include co- director Lowell Frank and assistant director Whitney Ball.

A filthy hobo engages a live-action, evapo-casting, anime supervillain in transdimensional battle for control of his daughter’s reborn soul. Participating panelists include director Dean Bull; David Britz, producer of Hunger Pains and Suzuki performance specialist; Chase Melendez, production designer of Clawed; Stuart Voytilla, author of Myth and the Movies; and Vienna Tutera costume designer for Long Brown Coat.
4:55Energy Hunter
In the year 3740, a scientist and his assistant land on planet Earth, looking for a source of clean energy. Great location shooting and special effects highlight this short film written, produced, and directed by Spanish filmmaker Albert Arizza.
5:15Mexican Hat
Set in the old west, a group of cowboys venture into the ancient land of the Anasazi to search for lost cattle. What they find in the desert is far more creepy and sinister. As the cattle reappear murdered and mutilated, the cowboys find that they can't account for several hours each day. They see lights in the sky and have a series of strange, otherworldly encounters. Finally, they are forced to realize that they are the victims of alien abductions. Panelists include Richard Harrah, director and co-writer; Betsy Sullenger, producer; and actors Bill Bumiller, Dan Campbell, and Ed Adams.
6:00Outside
After the apocalypse, in a society where people are isolated in sealed bunkers, a young woman confronts her fears of the unknown when she makes contact with an outsider. Winner of the Directors Guild of America Student Film Award. "Utterly captivating"—Filmthreat.com. Participating panelists include writer/director Jenn Kao, actor Courtney Ford, producer Aleem Hossain, title designer Blaise Hossain, and title artist Rachel Flowers.
