Festival Screenings, Day 4

Documentaries

12:15Drakmar
A coming-of-age saga about a 14-year-old boy whose life alternates between the medieval fantasy kingdom of Adria and the real-world trials of a challenging adolescence. Participating panelists include Lowell Frank, co-director; Destin Cretton, co-director; Whitney Ball, assistant director; Colin Taylor, the main subject of the documentary, and Scott Mallory, also appearing in the film.
1:45Dreams From A Red Planet: The Next Giant Leap For Humanity
Has humanity attained the pinnacle of its potential, or is it about to be reached? This documentary explores how, for some, humanity is about to become a spacefaring civilization. Participating panelists include filmmaker Kurt Lancaster, the author of Falling Towards Jupiter.
2:05John Howe: There And Back Again
John Howe is one of today’s most famous fantasy artists and illustrators. Born and raised in Canada, Howe now lives in Switzerland. For a couple of decades, the name of John Howe has been closely linked to J. R. R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings and also to Peter Jackson’s movies, as Howe was one of the major art designers of the trilogy. This documentary tells the story of Howe, his life and work, exploring who the human being behind all this fantasy really is. This film includes many of Howe’s collaborators as well as other artists, including Peter Jackson, H. R. Giger, and Alan Lee, who help us to understand what it means to be a fantasy illustrator. The film is also an excursion into the subject of “fantasy bordering reality,” how these two opposites merge and intertwine to create a new world, an artist’s world, John Howe’s world.
3:00Swag: Volume 1
If you love free stuff, the San Diego Comic-Con, and pseudo-celebrity interviews, you're going to love this film! After screening a short film in Comic-Con’s Film Festival, Mario DeAngelis “accidentally” made a documentary about free stuff, or “swag,” at the 2005 event. This one-of-a-kind documentary has already spawned a sequel and includes interviews with Sam J. Jones (Flash Gordon) and Troma Studios head Lloyd Kaufman. Participating panelists include Mario DeAngelis, director; Adrian Velazquez, San Diego photographer and director of photography; Aaron Cole, musician; Tony Ericksen, swag hunter/filmmaker; and Loren Teryl, swag hunter.
