A Portfolio Review Session People waiting in the Portfolio Review Area

Want to put your skills to use for a top comic, animation, special effects or design company? Then get that portfolio together and head up to the Portfolio Review Area in the Sails Pavilion area of the Convention Center, where you’ll find industry professionals waiting to critique your work and answer questions.

The companies listed below reserved portfolio space early. More will be added as the con rolls on, so be sure to check the daily events guide and the schedule at the Autograph Area Information Desk each day.

Arch Enemy Entertainment

Arch Enemy Entertainment is giving artists a rare opportunity to have their portfolios reviewed. Comic book artist Tone Rodriguez (Violent Messiahs, Snake Plissken Chronicles, U.T.F.) and screenwriter/comic book writer William Wilson (Snake Plissken anime, G.I. Joe: Frontline) will be on hand to review portfolios. Artists need to bring copies of their samples along with their contact information. Please note that samples will not be returned.

The Boondocks

Carl Jones (Producer, The Boondocks) and Seung Kim (Co-Supervision Director, The Boondocks) will be evaulating portfolios of storyboard and character designers with an eye on artists who have the potential to be a part of future seasons of The Boondocks, which makes its return to Adult Swim in October. Storyboard artists should bring a minimum of five consecutive pages of storyboard panels.

CinemaGraphix Entertainment is a motion-picture production and publishing company that enhances the value and marketability of its movie and television projects by first launching them in the comic book marketplace. All of the CinemaGraphix storylines are written by movie and television screenwriters with multiple produced credits. CinemaGraphix is looking for pencilers, inkers, colorists, and letterers for a wide variety of feature-film-related comic books and graphic novels. They are especially interested in pencilers who can ink their own work and who specialize in one or more of the following categories: horror, science fiction, good girl, action, or animation. For serious consideration, please bring photocopied samples or sample digital files that can be left behind.

Dark Horse

Dark Horse editors will be reviewing the storytelling work of professional-level comics artists. They will be looking at consecutive story pages only, with an eye toward storytelling as well as drawing skills. A minimum of five consecutive pages is required. Please bring your most recent work. Artists with cover paintings, inking or color samples, pinups, or sketches are invited to submit work by following the instructions found by clicking here. It is suggested that this review be treated as a job interview.

Go! Comi is interested in seeing shojo (girls’) manga style original character design and pinup art. No superhero art, please. The reviewers are interested in seeing pencils, inks, and color work in the manga style. They are also interested in seeing painted background, landscape, or architectural art. Sequential art is okay but not required. Please, no fan art of existing characters. Portfolio must include recent work.

Lucas Licensing is seeking to review portfolios of a wide variety. Art director Troy Alders will provide critiques and offer tips and suggestions. From comic art to photo-collage and illustration, he will be looking for work that is dynamic, unique, and impactful, whether cartoon drawings, logo designs (icons/symbols/emblems), traditional or digital illustration, or art that shows strong design skills. The use of typography is always extremely helpful as well as illustrations, paintings, and collages that incorporate photography.

Marvel Entertainment, Inc.

Marvel Entertainment, Inc., one of the world’s most prominent character-based entertainment companies with a library of over 5,000 proprietary characters, will be reviewing portfolios of artists, inkers, and colorists for potential future work at the House of Ideas. All creators interested in having their portfolio reviewed should bring copies of their artwork (no originals) to the Marvel booth, #2429, by 5:00 pm on Friday. After reviewing all samples, on Saturday morning Marvel will display a list of names of those people they are interested in meeting with, along with corresponding times. Pencilers should be prepared to drop off at least 5 pages of sequential art as well as examples of cover illustrations. Inkers’ portfolio samples should contain examples of their work over at least three different pencilers. Colorists should provide samples that effectively display their different techniques and coloring abilities on various types of pieces. Samples will not be returned.

McFarlane Toys

McFarlane Toys is looking for extremely talented concept artists, sculptors, 3D modelers, and toy designers. They want to look at your very best work, so bring your résumé and copies of your portfolio. Plan on leaving paper copies, a CD, DVD, or website URL.
