Comics, once again, dominates programming at WonderCon 2006

Comics, Once Again, Dominates WonderCon 2006 Program Schedule!

DC, Dark Horse, Image, Bongo plan special presentations

The WonderCon programming is in its final stages! Here’s a sneak peek at some of the great comics-oriented events coming up at the show on February 10, 11 and 12 at Moscone Center West in San Francisco.

DC Comics First up, DC Comics with a stellar line-up of presentations, focusing on the DC Universe, Vertigo and Wildstorm! Friday, Feb. 10 includes a look at what’s next at Vertigo with VP and executive editor Karen Berger and writer/artist Howard Chaykin. Also on Friday, it’s a panel you’ll see ONLY at WonderCon: “Modern Architecture: The Architects of the DC Universe” brings together senior VP Dan DiDio and WonderCon special guests Grant Morrison, Greg Rucka, and Mark Waid, to talk about the post Crisis DCU. Don’t miss this exclusive event!

On Saturday, DC continues with “DC Universe 2006: The Best Is Yet to Come,” featuring DiDio, Morrison, Rucka and Waid, joined by VP, sales Bob Wayne, artist Mathew Clark and Howard Chaykin. Saturday continues with the WonderCon spotlight turned on special guests Grant Morrison, Mark Waid and Greg Rucka in solo events.

WildStorm And stay tuned for Sunday! “Dr.” Dan DiDio offers his prescription for “Crisis Counseling,” with consulting “physicians” Morrison, Rucka and Waid. It’s Dr. Dan’s first session of the new year. And then it’s WildStorm’s turn on stage with a panel featuring WS executive editor Scott Dunbier, Grant Morrison, artist Alé Garza and Asako Suzuki, WildStorm’s Director of Manga. As usual, DC rocks the WonderCon house with an incredible schedule of events and talent!

Dark Horse Comics Dark Horse returns to WonderCon! And their programming slate includes a Q&A session on Saturday, Feb. 11 and a look at the Emily the Strange comic book on Sunday, Feb. 12. Plus, WonderCon special guests—and Dark Horse mainstays— Mike Mignola and Eric Powell get the spotlight turned on them on Friday and Saturday, respectively.

Image Comics Image Comics is also well represented at this year’s show with Erik Larsen and Frank Cho as special guests. Image turns the spotlight on itself on Friday, February 10 with a company presentation featuring both Larsen and Cho. On Saturday, the individual spotlights are on Larsen and Cho in special solo events.

“Bongo Mania” strikes on Friday, Feb. 10 with Bongo stalwarts Bill Morrison and moderator Terry Delegeane talking with Batton Lash, Terry Moore, Eric Powell, and Paul Dini. What’s next in the Bongo-verse? This is the place to find out!

Spotlights on all of our special guests also figure into WonderCon programming. With a guest list second to none, here’s your chance to see your favorites up-close and personal. Other guest-oriented spotlights during the weekend include Mike and Laura Allred, Chris Bachalo, Peter David, Ramona Fradon, Terry Moore, Kevin Smith, and Gahan Wilson.

Mark Evanier (left) moderates numerous panels and spotlights, including an interview with Noel Neill (Lois Lane) of the classic Superman TV series (center) and WonderCon 2006 special guest Ramona Fradon (right)

And it wouldn’t be a WonderCon with out the panel-moderating stylings of Mark Evanier. In addition to his moderating of the Ramona Fradon spotlight, Mark will be interviewing author Gerard Jones on his great comics-oriented book, Men of Tomorrow. Evanier also takes part in an Animation Writers event on Saturday (including some of the best writers in that field: Paul Dini, Stan Berkowitz, Alan Burnett and Adam Beechen), interviews comics writers Mark Waid, Peter David and Terry Moore in a Sunday event, and sits down for a talk with the legendary actress who brought Lois Lane to life, Noel Neill. And oh, yeah…you can count on something with Mark and that Sergio guy who just happens to be the world’s fastest cartoonist!

Boom! Studios Beyond all of this, there’s presentations by Boom! Studios, one of the fastest-rising new comics companies out there, and on the latest exhibitions at both the Cartoon Art Museum and the Charles M. Schulz Museum. “New Challenges in Self-Publishing,” features Batton Lash, Billy Martinez, Paige Braddock and Phil Foglio talking about their own experiences in publishing their comics. Scott Shaw! presents his new edition of Oddball Comics and that other wacky comics Scott, Scott Saavedra offers a new version of Comic Book Heaven LIVE. The local chapter of the National Cartoonists Society is on hand with a special presentation on Saturday. Saturday is also the day for a special panel celebrating the 20th anniversary of WonderCon, featuring members from the previous management team.

Sunday features panels devoted to “The Future of Comics Retailing,” and the long-running Comic-Con International event, “Secret Origin of Good Readers.” This popular educational panel makes its second appearance at WonderCon.

See the world premiere screening of 'Ultimate Avengers: The Movie' DVD only at WonderCon 2006 Are we done yet? NO! WonderCon is incredibly pleased to present the world premiere screening of the brand-new Ultimate Avengers: The Movie DVD from Marvel Animated Features and Lionsgate. The DVD doesn't come out until February 21, but you can be the first to see the world premiere of this animated movie in its entirety, ONLY at WonderCon! Plus, dress up as your favorite Ultimates or Avengers hero and have the opportunity to be one of the first to own the DVD before it's released.
