A LOOK BACK AT WONDERCON 2007

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Comics-Oriented Programming Once Again Dominates WonderCon

WonderCon, Northern California's largest comic book and pop culture convention, began rolling out the schedule of programming for the three-day event to be held March 2-4, 2007 at Moscone Center South in San Francisco.

Comics related programming, as expected, once again dominates the schedule of events for the twenty-one year old show. "As huge fans of comic books, obviously programming is going to be comics heavy," said David Glanzer, spokesperson for the non-profit event, "we always put on the kind of show we would want to attend, and I think our programming best reflects this."

The weekend will be filled with panels and programs on all aspects of comics and pop culture as well as a number of hands on workshops, spotlights on legends, both past and current, of the comics industry and, for the first time at WonderCon, The Comics Arts Conference (CAC).

Long regarded as one of the leading academic conferences related to comic art in the country, the CAC is designed to bring together comics scholars, professionals, critics, and historians to promote and engage in serious study of the medium, and to be involved in the dynamic process of evolving an aesthetic and a criticism of the comics art form.

Programming for the CAC will be held on Saturday, March 3, and the 6-part seminar will cover such diverse topics as Carl Barks, utopia under Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman, flying women in the comics of World War II, the genesis of the cinematic superhero, and much more. While Saturday will feature programming for the CAC, comics related programming will be held throughout the weekend.

Mark Evanier Special Guest Mark Evanier will moderate many panels on Comics at this year's WonderCon

Author, comic book, and television series writer Mark Evanier, a staple of comics programming at WonderCon's sister show Comic-Con in San Diego, will moderate panels featuring Nick Cardy, Gene Colan, Al Feldstein, author Gerard Jones, and frequent collaborator Sergio Aragonés. Evanier also talks Mad Magazine with Feldstein and Aragonés and the art of the comic book cover in "Cover Story," with Cardy, Colan, Feldstein and current comics cover artists Tony Harris, Phil Jimenez, and Michael Turner.

Major comics publishers such as DC Comics, WildStorm, Vertigo, Dark Horse Comics, Image Comics, Aspen Comics, SLG Publishing, VIZ, IDW, WildCard Ink and BOOM! Studios will also offer presentations. Popular writer/artist Terry Moore talks about the soon-to-end Strangers In Paradise, his long running independent comic. The world of comics strips is represented by special guest Patrick McDonnell (Mutts) and the National Cartoonists Society. WonderCon also offers workshops with colorist Steve Oliffe and famed art instructor Marshall Vandruff, as well as panels devoted to the Cartoon Art Museum, pod casting, the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund (CBLDF), the education-oriented "Secret Origin of Good Readers," and much more.

WonderCon is operated by San Diego Comic-Con International, a nonprofit educational organization dedicated to creating awareness of, and appreciation for, comics and related popular art forms, primarily through the presentation of conventions and events that celebrate the historic and ongoing contribution of comics to art and culture.
