This year’s WonderCon Masquerade costume competition showcased 31 entries, for a
total of 73 costumes (plus one robot dog) crossing the stage in the Esplanade
Ballroom. The Saturday evening audience numbered over 1,700, and was treated to
special movie previews before the show and during the judging intermission, and
also recent award-winning Star Wars Fan Films provided by Lucasfilm. There were
trophies given in six categories, plus five Honorable Mentions, as well as a few
prizes donated by companies. For a third of our entries, this was their first
time on a Masquerade stage, but their presentations seemed as polished as the
experienced costumers in the show.
DC Comics Company Prize Winner: "Green Lantern Corps", worn and made by Ron Smith and Denise Lombard
The Master of Ceremonies was once again the always-entertaining writer and
artist Phil Foglio of Studio Foglio. The guest judges included the award-winning
master comic book colorist Steve Oliff, actress, producer and prolific
convention costumer Valerie Perez, and graphic artist and designer Brian Scott,
whose over 20 years’ experience with the Society for Creative Anachronism
crafting leather and metal into armor and other costume items served him well as
our workmanship judge.
Geek Monthly Prize winner and Honorable Mention: "Creature from the Black Lagoon",
worn & made by Ericson Yee
WonderCon gives a hearty thanks to all the contestants for all the dedication
and work put into their creations, to the professionals who donated their time
as Master of Ceremonies and judges, to the companies that provided generous cash
and merchandise prizes, and to the volunteers that worked behind the scenes
helping out. We look forward to seeing you again for next year’s event as the
Masquerade continues to grow in size, dazzle, and fun.
Honorable Mention: "Goddesses Deedlit & Pirotess", worn & made by Vanessa Grundy and Melissa Hoppe
