Marketing and Publications Editor

The Marketing and Publications Editor is responsible for soliciting, collecting, and overseeing materials and information for various publications related to the San Diego Comic Convention (SDCC) and its subsidiaries. This role includes overseeing the entire publication process—from content creation and layout design to production and delivery—while managing budgets allocated for these projects. The Marketing and Publications Editor will ​collaborate with external artists, writers, and vendors to produce covers, posters, and articles while coordinating with the​ Communications and Strategy team to ensure each publication meets the highest standards of quality.


  • Collaborate with SDCC departments to oversee the production, editing, and delivery of various publications, including but not limited to:
    • Comic-Con Souvenir Book
    • WonderCon Program Book
    • Digital Newsletters
    • Departmental Publications (Exhibitor Newswire, Studio Relations Guide, Programming Panel Request Guide, Rate card, etc.)
  • Create Project Management Worksheets to set content, deadlines, and track workflow for each publication, including outlines, page counts, advertising placements, and content assignments
  • Plan and maintain a comprehensive budget for each publication, detailing projected costs for design, printing, distribution, and advertising; ensuring alignment with overall organizational financial goals and ensuring expenditures are within Publications budget limits
  • Regularly monitor and track expenditures against the budget, identifying any discrepancies or unexpected costs
  • Analyze the cost-effectiveness of various production methods, materials, and vendors. Conduct comparisons to ensure the best value for services, negotiating rates where applicable
  • Establish contingency plans for budget overruns, identifying areas where adjustments can be made to stay within financial limits without compromising quality
  • Work with internal staff, external writers, artists, and industry professionals to solicit and gather artwork, articles, and materials for publications
  • Coordinate the selection of cover artists and manage special sections, such as anniversaries and the In Memoriam section for key publications
  • Collaborate with the graphic designer(s) to gather and optimize graphics for layouts, including maps and programming grids, ensuring all designs meet publication standards
  • Research and select printers for on-site publications, coordinating timelines to ensure all contributing departments adhere to production schedules
  • Collaborate with the Development department to prepare and upload publication content to the Comic-Con website, ensuring online accessibility and engagement
  • Coordinate with CCSO and Comic-Con Museum representative(s) to create compelling marketing content for publications and promotional materials
  • Oversee ad sales, ensuring ad spaces are allocated correctly and specifications are met
  • Create and maintain a comprehensive rate card that outlines advertising rates, specifications, and placement options, ensuring it is easily accessible to potential advertisers
  • Collaborate with relevant stakeholders to finalize all content before delivery to the graphic design team, ensuring accuracy and quality
  • Coordinate the use of approved images on promotional items
  • Manage the creation of special publications or materials related to specific events, ensuring they align with overall marketing strategies
  • Collaborate with the Communications and Strategy department  to ensure that all publication content and advertising strategies align with the overall branding and marketing objectives of the organization
  • Collaborate on marketing campaigns that promote upcoming publications, utilizing various channels (social media, email newsletters, website features) to maximize visibility and engagement
  • Oversee the allocation of ad space within each publication, striving to have ads placed strategically to enhance visibility and reader engagement
  • Develop and implement comprehensive marketing strategies to promote products, services, and events for both San Diego Comic Convention and Comic-Con Museum
  • Plan, execute, and oversee marketing campaigns across various channels (digital, print, social media) to enhance brand visibility and audience engagement
  • Oversee the creation of engaging promotional content for various platforms, including social media, newsletters, brochures, and website copy, ensuring consistency in messaging and brand alignment
  • Conduct thorough market research to identify trends, audience preferences, and the competitive landscape, using insights to inform and refine marketing strategies
  • Analyze target demographics and tailor marketing campaigns to effectively engage specific audience segments
  • Monitor and analyze the performance of marketing campaigns, utilizing data insights to optimize strategies and improve outreach effectiveness
  • Plan and execute marketing initiatives for events, including the development of promotional materials and on-site marketing strategies to maximize attendee engagement, ensuring consistent messaging and visual identity across all channels
  • Collaborate with advertising partners to develop targeted ad campaigns, ensuring optimal placement and messaging within publications and across platforms
  • Assist in the creation and management of promotional materials for Comic-Con Museum exhibits and events throughout the year, including posters and advertisements
  • Manage relationships with external vendors and agencies, ensuring alignment with marketing goals and objectives
  • Communicate marketing plans and performance metrics to stakeholders, providing regular updates on progress and results
  • Perform other duties as assigned

  • High School Diploma or GED is required
  • Developed understanding of the comic book, popular arts, and entertainment industries, including current trends, key players, and audience preferences
  • Degree, coursework, and/or experience in Graphic Design, Book/Magazine/Page Layout, General Graphic Arts, or related fields is preferred 
  • Comprehensive understanding of page layout, typography, and design principles for books and magazines
  • Familiarity with Adobe Creative Suite applications, including Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign; knowledge of typography tools is preferred 
  • Strong proficiency in grammar, punctuation, and familiarity with style guides (e.g., AP, Chicago Manual of Style)
  • Exceptional ability to identify errors and inconsistencies
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively with minimal supervision and ability to problem-solve in complex situations

  • Knowledge of and proficiency in in-office systems used by the organization, including but not limited to Microsoft Office, Google Suite (G Suite, formerly Google Apps), specifically Google Mail (Gmail), Google Drive, Google Docs/Sheets/Slides, Configio, and ClickUp; as well as other common office software and  applications
  • Familiarity with or willingness to learn current and new systems and platforms used by the organization
