Comic-Con 50: Read Exclusive Excerpts From This Year’s Souvenir Book!
Comic-Con celebrated its 50th consecutive San Diego show this past July. In honor of that milestone, we created a very special edition of our annual Souvenir Book, which focused on the incredible history of the event. The Souvenir Book is available only at Comic-Con, given free to attendees, professionals, exhibitors, volunteers, and staff (while supplies last). Over the next few weeks, we’re going to share excerpts from this year’s book with downloadable PDFs featuring entire sections devoted to the five decades of Comic-Con: The 1970s, 1980s, 1990s, 2000s, and 2010s.
First up is comics historian and author Bill Schelly’s history of the event, “The Comic-Con of Destiny.” Bill was an expert on comics fandom and creators and an Eisner Award-winner for his book Harvey Kurtzman: The Man Who Created MAD and Revolutionized Humor in America. Sadly, Bill’s article in this year’s Souvenir Book (one of many he’s written for Comic-Con over the years) was one of the last major pieces he worked on. He died in September 2019.
Bookmark this Toucan post and check in every Monday and Thursday for the next few weeks to see all the special Souvenir Book excerpts celebrating Comic-Con 50.
