Souvenir Book Deadline Looms!

Each year at Comic-Con International, we produce a 200-page trade paperback, which we call the Souvenir Book. The book is a tradition at the show, going back many years. It started as being the show guide, including programming schedules, maps, etc., but over the years, as Comic-Con, the schedule portion of the event spun off into its own publication, the Events Guide. Nowadays, we also produce the Quick Guide, a color publication which features all of our maps, the “at-a-glance” program schedule grids and other info in an easy to roll up size, so you can stuff it your back pocket and take it along. The Events Guide remains the “Show Bible,” with the complete schedules for every facet of the event, including the program descriptions, and also tops 200 pages each year.

ABOVE: Comic-Con Souvenir Books from years past. Top row (l to r): 1975 by Sergio Aragonés, 1987 by Moebius, 1992 by Ken Steacy; bottom row: 1995 by Rick Geary, 1998 by Steranko, 2001 by Jeff Smith. Art is copyright respective artists.

The Souvenir Book has evolved into something else, a collectible, full-color trade paperback that’s the perfect souvenir of the event. It’s part “Comic-Con Yearbook,” including info from the previous 12 months such as Eisner Award winners, new Hall of Fame inductees, and (sadly), tributes to industry luminaries who have passed away over the previous year and were part of the extended Comic-Con family of guests and creators. It’s also the guide to all the current special guests at this year’s show, featuring photos and bios of every invited guest. Some of those guests are invited due to their association with a particular anniversary celebration, and you’ll find special sections devoted to each of those, too, showcasing art and articles on them. This year’s Souvenir Book will include artwork and historical articles from fans from all over the world, devoted to the following anniversaries:

  • Superman 75th
  • Doctor Who 50th
  • Avengers 50th
  • Doctor Strange 50th
  • X-Men 50th
  • ElfQuest 35th
  • Sandman 25th
  • The Tick 25th
  • Bongo Comics 20th
  • Milestone Comics 20th
  • Strangers in Paradise 20th
  • Aspen Comics 20th

The best part of all of this? YOU can contribute to the book with your own art and articles devoted to our anniversary celebrations! But you have to hurry, because the deadline for submissions is next Friday, April 19 at 11:59 PM. You do not have to attend the show to contribute. Due to the production schedule on producing this 200-page book, we cannot accept any submissions after that date and time. For more info on how to submit your art and articles, please visit our Souvenir Book page by clicking here. Be sure to carefully read the info on how to submit, which includes word-count for articles, sizes and file formats for art, and much more.

We know you love these things as much as we do, and we look forward to seeing your art and articles and potentially featuring them in the Comic-Con International Souvenir Book. There’s still time to be a part of the 2013 edition, but you have to act now!

If you have any questions about contributing to the Souvenir Book, please contact us at Please note: we cannot extend the deadline for any reason, and we do not accept photos or fan fiction. Submission of artwork or articles for the Souvenir Book is not a guarantee of placement in the book.
