Devourer of Words 022: Comics Writers I\u2019m Thankful for<\/h1>\n\n\n

We are rapidly approaching Thanksgiving, at least according to every commercial on every channel\u2014at least the commercials that aren\u2019t already ramming Christmas down our collective throat. And since it\u2019s time for recognizing the things we\u2019re thankful for, I figured this was the month to rattle off some of the comic book writers I\u2019m thankful that I get to read on a regular basis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Please note:<\/em> There are more than these five writers I\u2019m thankful for. But I\u2019m listing these five. Because of reasons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Warren Ellis<\/strong><\/h6>\n\n\n\n

Uncle Warren has his ebb and flow periods when it comes to comics. Sometimes he\u2019s off writing novels or working in TV or calling down Elder Gods with his Whiskytronic Amplifier. But this year, with the double-barreled blast of Marvel\u2019s Moon Knight<\/em> (with Declan Shalvey) and Image\u2019s Trees<\/em> (with Jason Howard), Ellis once again proved his mettle. And his Big Brain is still Big.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ed Brubaker<\/strong><\/h6>\n\n\n\n

The architect behind the death of Captain America and the rise of the Winter Soldier has taken his penchant for spies and broken things to Image, where he\u2019s doing gangbusters work on books like Velvet,<\/em> The Fade-Out,<\/em> and the recently completed Fatale.<\/em> Deep and rich, fleet and funny.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Greg Rucka<\/strong><\/h6>\n\n\n\n

Every world Rucka builds feels like a world that has always existed\u2014whether it\u2019s a sky-high airship adventure (Lady Sabre & the Pirates of the Ineffable Aether<\/em>) or a near-future populated by tech-Mafioso families and their lab-grown assassins (Lazarus<\/em>); there\u2019s a texture there you simply don\u2019t get in most comics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kelly Sue DeConnick<\/strong><\/h6>\n\n\n\n

Pretty Deadly<\/em> is pretty terrific. Ask anyone in any comics shop and they\u2019ll tell you: DeConnick\u2019s Western pulses with the juice of stories never told that still seem eternal. And you know that Captain Marvel<\/em> movie Marvel just announced? Wouldn\u2019t exist if it weren\u2019t for DeConnick\u2019s monthly book. She can blend the funny and the epic with a deftness few can touch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mark Waid<\/strong><\/h6>\n\n\n\n

I feel pretty safe in saying that no one writes superhero books quite like Mark Waid. His mutant power is being able to drill down to the core of a character and find the point around which he revolves, and THEN finds the story no one\u2019s told about him. Or her. Be it Daredevil<\/em> or the Hulk,<\/em> on Insufferable<\/em> or Empire<\/em>\u2014Waid is a crafter of heroic fiction like none other.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I learn something new every time I read books from these folks. And since I am, as a writer, a constant work in progress, I thank them for being as consistently good as they are.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
