THE PANELS – FEATURED TOPICS:
SAM: Storytelling Across Media focuses on storytelling through a series of panels that cover the art of storytelling across trending topics and in diverse media, encompassing comics, books, gaming, movies, and more.
Storytelling in Wrestling
11:30 AM–12:30 PM
Diego Luna hosts professional wrestlers Gran Jaguar and Nightmare Azteca in a discussion on the importance of lucha libre/wrestling in culture through storytelling. Panelists will discuss the behind-the-scenes operations of storytelling for lucha libre on TV, including the maximum fight for honor known as Luchas de Apuestas (“Bet Matches”)!
Storytelling Sound and Music
12:30 PM–1:30 PM
Dive into the world of music for film, television, and beyond in this behind-the-scenes panel featuring composers and songwriters! Learn how music shapes the story to move the plot forward, evoke emotions in the audience, further character development, and more. Featuring composer George Streicher (Music for Halloween Night), composer James Burkholder (Shelby Oaks), co-composer Matthew Feder (Asteroid), songwriter/co-creator/executive producer Michelle Lewis (Kindergarten: The Musical), and composer Youssef Guezoum (Power Rangers, Deep State, Monsters, The Board, Promise). Storytelling in Audio Dramas

Emmy Award-winning TV writer and New York Times bestselling author Joshua Pruett (Phineas and Ferb, Mystery Science Theater 3000, The Last Comics on Earth) shares a behind-the-scenes look at writing original Doctor Who stories for Big Finish Productions. From hiding behind the sofa as a young Doctor Who fan to writing for classic Doctors and inventing new Who monsters, Joshua will focus on the nuts and bolts of writing for audio, plus tips and tricks for building stories within the worlds of Doctor Who, and beyond.
Science in Storytelling
2:30 PM–3:30 PM
Science fiction often walks a fine line between imagination and reality. But when does scientific accuracy actually matter—and when is it okay to just say “timey-wimey wibbly-wobbly?” Physicist Clifford Johnson (science advisor for Palm Springs and multiple Marvel Cinematic Universe projects) and paleontologist Gabriel-Philip Santos (co-founder of Cosplay for Science and cohost of PBS Eons) discuss how getting the science of concepts like wormholes or dinosaur de-extinction at least partially right, can build trust in science—even in the most fantastical worlds. Moderated by Deb Bright (San Diego Science Writers Association).
Storytelling in Games: Tabletop Game Dungeon Masters & Storytellers
3:30 PM–4:30 PM
Dungeon Masters bring words to life for their players through adventures, dungeon dives, and creative collaboration. Weston Gardner (musician, dungeon master) leads expert tabletop role-playing game masters in a discussion as they share worldbuilding techniques, tips for crafting narrative stories, balancing player choice, and more.
