Accessibility and SDCC

San Diego Comic Convention (SDCC), organizer of the annual Comic-Con International and WonderCon events, is committed to providing an inclusive and accessible experience for our visitors.

Our website, www.comic-con.org, is designed with accessibility in mind. We meet or exceed the Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act, which are the technical requirements that ensure we’re complying with federal Section 508 law. We also conform to the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) and their industry-standard Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 and meet Level AA standards, which means our content is accessible to most people in most circumstances.

We continually modify our websites to remain in compliance with applicable laws and industry standards. Here are some of the features that help make our site more accessible:

  • Turn Off Background Effect: By clicking on the eye icon in the upper right corner of all pages, users can remove the moving color “nebula” to improve readability. Click the eye icon again to re-enable the “nebula” effect.
  • Keyboard Navigation: Our website is fully navigable using a keyboard, allowing users to access all features without the need for a mouse.
  • Screen Reader Compatibility: We have optimized our site to work seamlessly with screen readers, providing descriptive text for images and other non-text elements.
  • Color Contrast: Our design prioritizes high contrast between text and background to improve readability for users with visual impairments.
  • Alternative Text for Images: All images on our site include alt. text descriptions to provide context and information for those using screen readers.
  • Accessible Forms: Our forms are designed to be easily navigable and usable by all visitors, with clear labels and instructions.
  • Reduce Motion: Our site also supports reduced-motion preferences available in your browser:
    • For users that experience distraction or nausea from animated content, users can indicate their motion preference.
    • In Windows 10: Settings > Ease of Access > Display > Show animations in Windows
    • In Windows 11: Settings > Accessibility > Visual Effects > Animation Effects
    • In macOS: System Preferences > Accessibility > Display > Reduce motion
    • In iOS: Settings > Accessibility > Motion
    • In Android 9+: Settings > Accessibility > Remove animations
    • In Firefox about:config: Add a number preference called ui.prefersReducedMotion and set its value to either 0 for full animation or to 1 to indicate a preference for reduced motion. Changes to this preference take effect immediately.
  • Captioned Videos: We provide captions for all our video content where possible to assist users who are deaf or hard of hearing to enjoy our multimedia offerings.
