Important Information Regarding Programs and Autographs at Comic-Con
All event and program rooms have limited capacity as set by the Fire Marshall. Even though your badge
is needed to get into all events, it does not guarantee you access to any event if it has reached its
capacity. We do not clear rooms between events. Most autograph signings are of a limited nature.

What's In A Name?
A brief history of the Robert A. Heinlein Blood Drive
For science fiction fans, few names were as stellar as Robert A. Heinlein. From
Star Ship Troopers to Stranger in a Strange Land, Heinlein was the
dean of SF writers. Unfortunately, he rarely attended conventions, so his
readers had few opportunities to meet the master in person.
Then in the early 1970s, Heinlein had a life-threatening illness and needed many
pints of a rare blood type. He felt he owed his life to the donors, so when
asked to be a guest at the 1976 World Con in his hometown of Kansas City, he
agreed-but with one specific stipulation: that he would only sign autographs for
people who donated blood.
Thus longtime Comic-Con committee member Jackie Estrada
approached the author with an offer to hold a blood drive
in San Diego if he would consent to being a guest. He agreed,
and in 1977 Heinlein came to Comic-Con. He and his wife,
Ginny, had a great time and Heinlein even drew a picture
for the Sunday morning Art Auction.
"David Scroggy [now a Vice President at Dark Horse Comics] was the first blood
drive coordinator," recalls Estrada. "We also had Theodore Sturgeon there
signing his book, Some of Your Blood, which he gave to all of the blood donors.
We also had entertainment for the people while they were [donating blood]. I
remember that Leslie Cabarga played the piano, C. C. Beck played the guitar. It
was a very fun event and Robert was delighted. We've had the blood drive every
year since."
Robert A. Heinlein Blood Drive Sets New Record!
Comic-Con donors help save lives!
2007's t-shirt art, created and donated by John Smallwood-Garcia of Dream Media
That's right! San Diego Comic-Con encourages you to take a little time at the
convention to save someone's life. Be a real hero! 2007 marks the 100th birthday
of the legendary science fiction writer Robert A. Heinlein. There's no more
perfect way to commemorate this centennial than supporting the late author's
wishes for paying forward through blood donation.
When you donate blood at the San Diego Comic-Con Robert A. Heinlein Blood Drive
you will receive a special goody bag with comics, books and other fun things as
a special thank you.
The San Diego Blood Bank
will give you a limited edition t-shirt, and you'll get a raffle ticket for a chance to win one of the many
different prizes that are donated by exhibitors -- some of these prizes have been
valued at over $100! The winning numbers are posted daily just after 6:00 PM
(3:00 PM Sunday) at the Blood Drive Booth, upstairs in the Sails Pavilion. And
if all of this isn't enough, we may have yet another exclusive surprise for our
donors!
In 2007, the Robert A Heinlein Blood Drive expanded to cover all four days of
Comic Con International. This year's response was phenomenal. Once again, Comic-
Con attendees generous donations made the Blood Drive the second largest in San
Diego County.
The San Diego Blood Bank collected a new record: 841 pints of blood, which beat
last year's Comic-Con record by 249 pints! Since its inception in 1977, the
overall total for the Robert A. Heinlein Blood Drive has been 6,468 pints.
Comic-Con wishes to thank the following companies and organizations who helped
make the 2007 Blood Drive so incredibly successful:
Diamond Select Toys provided donors with exclusive and limited Buffy, Dawn,
Wesley, and Spike figures from Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and Jean-Luc Picard
from the "Tapestry" episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation.
Tokyopop donated advance copies of Trinity Blood: Rage Against The Moons by
Sunao Yoshida, published for the first time in English. Yoshida's novels
inspired a gripping manga series and one of the most anticipated anime releases
in recent years.
The Heinlein Society supplied donors with a heart-shaped cloisonne SF lapel pin.
Comic-Con International provided a large variety of graphic novels, comics, and
other freebies for the goodie bags.
San Diego Blood Bank furnished donors with a free Blood Drive T shirt.
Exhibitors and Comic-Con staff donated prizes for the Donor's Drawing that was
held each evening. Winning numbers were posted at the Blood Drive Booth in the
Sails Pavilion. Among the dozens of prizes given away each day were free passes
to the San Diego Zoo, signed books, collectibles, and other wonderful prizes.
