Alan Moore Back on Top for 2006 Eisner Awards
With three awards, writer Alan Moore was the most lauded creator at the 18th
Annual Will Eisner Comic Industry Awards, held on Friday July 21 at the San
Diego Convention Center.
Moore was named Best Writer, his latest graphic novel, Top
Ten: The Forty-Niners, took Best Graphic Album—New honors, and Absolute
Watchmen, the deluxe hardbound slipcased edition of his landmark 1986
book with Dave Gibbons, won for Best Archival Collection—Comic Books. On hand
to accept his trophies was his fiancé and collaborator Melinda Gebbie.
Other creators to receive multiple awards were Kyle Baker (Best
Reality-Based Work for Nat Turner, and Best Writer/Artist—Humor for
Plastic Man and The Bakers), Grant Morrison (Best New Series
for All Star Superman, Best Limited Series for Seven Soldiers),
Chris Ware (Best Coloring for Acme Novelty Library #16, Best Publication
Design for Acme Novelty Library Report to Shareholders), and John Cassaday
(Best Penciller/Inker for Astonishing X-Men, which also won Best Continuing
Series).
The title that garnered the most trophies was DC’s recently cancelled
Solo, which took home Best Anthology, Best Single Issue (for the Darwyn
Cooke issue), and Best Short Story (Paul Pope’s “Teenage Sidekick”).
With the Moore and Solo wins, DC had the most awards of
any publisher: 12 (8 singles plus 4 shared). Pantheon came away with 3 trophies
(Best Graphic Album—Reprint for Charles Burns’s Black Hole, Best U.S.
Edition of Foreign Material for Joann Sfar’s The Rabbi’s Cat, and Ware’s
Publication Design), as did Top Shelf (Best Publication for a Younger Audience
for Andy Runton’s Owly: Flying Lessons, Best Comics-Related Periodical
for the special Will Eisner tribute issue of Comic Book Artist, and
Talent Deserving of Wider Recognition for Aaron Renier, of Spiral-Bound).
The only other publishers with multiple wins were Marvel (1 1/2), and Kyle
Baker Publishing (1 1/2).
Geof Darrow was on hand to accept his Best Writer/Artist trophy
for Shaolin Cowboy, Todd Klein won Best Letterer for the 13th time,
Ladronn was named Best Painter for Hip Flask: Mystery City, and The
Complete Calvin and Hobbes was named Best Archival Collection—Comic Strips.
Scott Kurtz’s
PvP won for Best Digital Comic, a category in its second
year. The gigantic hardbound Little Nemo in Slumberland shared the
Publication Design honors with Chris Ware.
In an emotional moment, Eisner/Miller was announced as
Best Comics-Related Book. Editors Charles Brownstein and Diana Schutz were
accompanied by one of the subjects of the book, Frank Miller.
Sergio Aragonés presented the Hall of Fame Awards. The judges’
choice awards went to the Mickey Mouse newspaper strip artist Floyd Gottfredson
and Wonder Woman creator William Moulton Marston. The four elected inductees
were Vaughn Bodé, Ramona Fradon, Russ Manning, and
Jim Steranko. Steranko
were present to accept his trophies. Mark Bodé accepted for his late father;
Manning’s widow Dodie accepted his award, and Paul Levitz accepted on behalf
of Fradon.

and Jimmy Palmiotti, Anina Bennett and Paul Guinan, and Misty Lee and Paul
Dini, as well as Publisher’s Weekly’s Calvin Reid,

Clampett and Manning awards. The Bob Clampett Humanitarian Award, presented
by Bob’s daughter Ruth, went to Publisher’s Weekly senior news editor
Calvin Reid for his tireless work behind the scenes to promote comics and
graphic novels. The Russ Manning Promising Newcomer Award was presented
by Dodie and Roger Manning to R. Kikuo Johnson, writer/artist of Night
Fisher, published by Fantagraphics.
